By the close of the audition, just three girls had made the cut.
NZNTM series producer Anna Lynch said the judges were a little disappointed with the turnout in the resort, but appreciated there were several factors to take into account.
"It's not the school holidays ... and a lot of the girls are at school."
Overall, some promising talent had already been found in the South Island through auditions in Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown, she said.
Many girls had travelled to Queenstown to audition, including from Invercargill, Wanaka, Cromwell, and one from Fox Glacier.
