The Dunedin Karting Club will have its annual night meeting tonight.
Racing will start about 6pm and will feature about 50 of the top drivers from the South Island, which is expected to include 25-30 karters from Otago.
The meeting, next to the golf course on Milners Rd, North Taieri, is significant for several reasons.
"[The meeting] incorporates the Thomson Memorial, which has been going for 30-something years," club president Daniel Harvey said.
The trophy remembers two members who were killed returning from a race meeting in Invercargill.
"For members that have been around in the club for many years, there is a lot of meaning to it. The family has been involved in karting for years and to lose two brothers in one night, it’s a biggie.
"The families involved don’t race any more, but they will be out here on the night presenting the trophies."
He said the club was one of only two in the country which held a night event.
Ten light towers would be set up and switched on around 7pm.
Drivers would race in age groups, with the youngest expected to be 6 years old and the oldest closer to 60.
Trophies are at stake in each grade and the Thomson Memorial will be awarded to the winner of the grade with the most contestants.
The event is free to the public and Harvey hoped it would be a good chance to showcase the sport.
