And baby makes three

Thirty-something Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is now 40-something and despite two earlier movies ending with her paired with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), Bridget Jones’s Baby (Rialto and Reading) opens with sad single Bridget blowing out the candle on her cupcake birthday-cake for one.

On the face of it she seems to have finally got it together.

She has achieved her goal weight; given up smoking and holds down a responsible job as a producer for a television news programme.

The problem is she still has feelings for Mark, with whom she broke up years ago because of his heavy-duty work schedule.

Her old friends are all busy raising children but her new work friends tell her she should bust out of her social rut with a bit of recreational sex.

Bridget is doubtful but manages to make a connection at a Glastonbury-type festival.

The next weekend she is thrown together with Mark and all the old feelings resurface.

Naturally, being Bridget, she manages to achieve the ultimate faux pas: getting pregnant without knowing who the father is.

Her mystery man is surprisingly easy to track down and Jack (Patrick Dempsey) is as pleased about the unexpected news as Mark is.

I had low expectations but Bridget Jones’s Baby is a very entertaining little number.

Even though the plot is full of holes and some of the jokes are recycled, Bridget still holds our affections after all these years.
