Charlene Napier, office manager for Waitaki electorate MP Jacqui Dean, peers through the damaged main window of the MP's electorate office in Oamaru's main street.

The man responsible for hundreds of dollars worth of damage to Mrs Dean's office on Friday night has turned himself in.

A 24-year-old Waimate man walked into the Waimate police station about noon yesterday and was being processed for allegedly throwing a stone at the MP's office, smashing a hole in the front window.

Mrs Dean said this was the first time her office had been vandalised.

She said having an office in Oamaru's Thames St was about being accessible to the public and the random act of vandalism was a price to pay for that type of access.

Acting Sergeant Paul Alden, of Waimate, said the man admitted to the vandalism and said he did not why he did it, but was drunk at the time.
