Every Wednesday, Waitaki Community Gardens co-ordinator Annie Beattie looks forward to the weekly visit from the crew from Idea Services.

Idea Services, which provides support for people with intellectual disabilities, has been involved with the gardens since they were formed.

A group of eight comes every Wednesday to spend time in the "classroom without walls".

"They love it and I love having them up here.

"It's fabulous," Miss Beattie said.

The group has planted a lavender hedge and also maintains its own vegetable plot, with silverbeet, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower planted for the winter.

Christopher Wright, who was placed third in the 2007 Telecom IHC Art Awards, has been working on a sculpture.

Idea Services community support worker Max Maxwell said one of the best things was the interaction with other members of the community.

They were also learning a range of skills.
