A small plane experiencing trouble with its landing gear has made an emergency landing at Palmerston North International Airport.
The four-seater Piper Cherokee circled the airport for more than an hour, burning off fuel and trying to get its landing gear to work, the Manawatu Standard reported.
Seven fire appliances were at the airport after the Fire Service was called at 10.24am, central communications shift manager Murray Dunbar said.
It landed at 11.50am and fire, police and ambulance staff were still on full standby.
Four people were believed to be on board the plane, which was heading from Wanganui to Wellington.
Airport manager Garry Goodman said the plane had made a "touch and go" attempt to land, but the pilot took off again because it was unclear if the landing gear would work properly.
The gear came down and the plane then landed safely.
