Members of the Rail and Maritime Transport Union at KiwiRail's Hillside workshops are planning a rally through Dunedin's George St at 11am on June 8 in protest at not being able to tender to build electric trains for Auckland.
Branch secretary Les Ingram said the rally was about "New Zealand work for New Zealand workers".
Mr Ingram said workers at Hillside were unanimous that the workshops were capable of building the electric multiple units and locomotives.
To build the trains, Hillside would need to modernise equipment and bring in expertise, he said.
"But we're there to be in the forefront."
