The Queenstown Lakes District Council's utilities committee approved a $884,609 upgrade to the pavement and stormwater drainage on Adamson Dr in Arrowtown at its meeting yesterday.
The council's project manager, Steve Hewland, said the road was last resealed 35 years ago and had exceeded its design life.
"Defects include alligator and longitudinal cracking, deformation, extensive edge break, rutting and several previously repaired patches. There is poor and limited drainage," he said.
An upgrade would reduce long-term maintenance costs and provide a 25-year design life.
He said the proposal was to rehabilitate the existing pavement and undertake associated stormwater drainage improvements.
A reticulated system would be built along Adamson Dr, which would collect stormwater run-off and prevent ponding.
The council had received several complaints about flooding on the road and blocked drains.
Some areas of footpath were in poor condition and required maintenance and had no cycle lanes.
The committee approved the scoping report and approved the project to proceed to concept design stage.
Pavement testing would be carried out to confirm the suitability of foam bitumen stabilisation and analyse the cost of two options.
Based on the results of this testing and further consultation with the community and the council, the best suited pavement rehabilitation technique would be selected.
Mr Hewland said the project, which would cost a total of $884,609 could attract funding from the New Zealand Transport Agency.
