Seven arrests- drink-drive message not getting through

Oamaru police are concerned the drink-driving message is still not getting through, with seven drivers apprehended in the Waitaki district at the weekend.

The rural drink-drive team was in the district and stopped 877 vehicles.

The highest level, of 1020mcg, was recorded by a 22-year-old Christchurch man who was stopped in Kurow.

Two of the motorists apprehended were also charged with dangerous driving, Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said.

Over the past few weekends, at least five drink-drivers had been apprehended every weekend and the message "obviously isn't getting through".

It was time for some peer pressure to stop people from driving drunk, he said.
