Production problems at the Globe Theatre in Dunedin have forced the company to postpone its next show, just a week before opening night.
Carluccio and the Queen of Hearts was due to open on April 22 and run until May 1.
However, theatre president Brian Kilkelly said a combination of factors had prompted the play's director and cast to call off the show.
"We pride ourselves at the Globe in putting on quality programmes.
"This play wasn't coming together in a sufficient way for us to go ahead.
"It's very unusual for this to happen at the Globe," he said.
An emergency meeting was held last night to discuss the issues surrounding the postponement, and look at when the play could be placed for performance in the Globe Theatre's busy schedule.
It was hoped the play could be rescheduled for later this year, Mr Kilkelly said.
