Alexandra police are urging motorists to be aware of emergency vehicles with flashing lights and sirens, following an incident in the town yesterday.

Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said an elderly Alexandra woman failed to notice a police vehicle with its siren going and lights flashing behind her as she drove into the town from Clyde.

Police followed her for more than 5km.

"Police attempted to stop her for a driving matter between Clyde and Alexandra, but she continued driving into the town and right through the main street, until she was finally stopped by another patrol vehicle at an intersection.

"She had not looked in her rear-view mirror and was completely oblivious," Sgt Kerrisk said.

The woman had not deliberately evaded police, and was apologetic when stopped and spoken to, he said.

It was a timely reminder to all motorists of their obligation to pull over or stop when emergency vehicles were on alert behind them.
