A Dunedin secondary school has responded to complaints of alleged anti-social behaviour by boys living at its hostel.

A group of students living at the Otago Boys’ High School hostel in Melrose St allegedly flashed their neighbours.

Rector Richard Hall said the school had addressed the complaints by taking internal disciplinary measures and moving the students involved.

He also said the complainant was overly aggressive and the school would no longer engage with him.

A Melrose St resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said his wife was flashed on multiple occasions about a month ago.

He said when she was making dinner in the apartment complex’s kitchen, a group of boys would stand in their underwear and stare at her from across the driveway, which separated the properties.

Then they would flash her.

He yelled at them, told them to stop and offered to not tell their teachers if they would leave them alone.

However, the behaviour continued, he said.

He said he had complained to the hostel and the school multiple times, but the issues persisted.

An egg was also thrown at the couple’s wall and the hostel said they would get the boys to clean it up, but that never happened.

On another occasion, the couple had a female guest over and the boys made sexually explicit gestures, which included thrusting at her.

When the complainant’s wife tried to exercise outside her apartment, the boys would taunt her and make her feel uncomfortable.

The boys also hit golf balls over the fence and hit their car with them.

He said the boys’ behaviour made him angry and he wanted to beat them up.

The school preached values of honour and respect, but the boys’ actions did not reflect that, he said.

"It’s stressful when you live here and you don’t want to see that.

"I gave them so many chances. It is unacceptable."

Mr Hall said the school and the hostel believed they had told the couple the school regretted any upset or distress two students caused.

"If this wasn’t clear, we apologise," he said.

"To the best of our knowledge today, there has not been any repeat of the behaviour."

The school interviewed the students, followed its internal disciplinary procedures and moved them.

Otago Boys’ also updated the hostel’s fittings and was in the process of updating external CCTV.

Mr Hall said the aggressive nature of the complainant with students and staff at the school and hostel was a concern.

Mr Hall said director of boarding John Hedges, who had 28 years’ experience with the New Zealand police, de-escalated the situation and dealt with the matter.

"We have chosen to not engage further, as is part of our health and safety procedures when it comes to threatening behaviour."
