University of Otago marine scientist Associate Prof Will Rayment holds a flare as part of a health and safety training day at the Portobello Marine Laboratory yesterday.
About 30 rocket flares, 10 smoke flares and 10 hand flares were deployed during the exercise, sending coloured smoke over part of Otago Harbour.
