A Dunedin resident has shot a stunning timelapse video showing the extent of a massive blaze which is visible from across the city.
The timelapse shot by James Kirkus-Lamont shows flames and smoke billowing from the hill and helicopters battling the blaze.
Mr Kirkus-Lamont said he shot the video from Opoho and sped up the footage using editing software on his computer.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand earlier said it believed property was not threatened by the major vegetation fire
However, it was closely watching the arrival of predicted strong winds later today.
