What do you think of the proposals

Plans for the George Street upgrade were released by the Dunedin City council this week, including photographic renderings of what the new streetscape is going to look like when complete. We spoke to people on George St at lunchtime on Thursday to find out what they thought of the proposals.

1. What do you think of the plans issued by the Dunedin City Council this week?

2. What do you think should be added to the plans?

3. What will people think about the George St upgrade in 10 years’ time?

Sahara Pohatu-Trow (24), retail worker

1. I like the greenery, I think we don’t have enough in the central city so that’s quite nice.

2. I like the sitting areas, I think it’s nice to have more sitting areas and safer pedestrian areas.

3. It will probably generate a lot more pedestrian traffic down here.

Sheldon Cotter (22), student

1. They are quite interesting, it definitely adds a lot more greenery and nice stuff around the city.

2. I think one of the bigger problems is going to be parking still.

3. Most people will just look back on it and say ‘yeah, it was probably a good decision’.

Anna Hall (33), unemployed

1. From what I’ve heard so far they seem like a good idea.

2. They could add a cafe, because I like eating out.

3. It’ll still be relevant in 10 years’ time.

Anne Dunckley  (71), retired

1. I have my doubts. They look beautiful, but they’re one-way and they haven’t decided what they are doing with the current one-way system, so how they’ll interact is a problem.

2. I can’t see where adding anything to their current one would be an advantage.

3. They took advantage of having to do the pipes, and they did this.

Damian Scott (31), volunteer worker

1. I think it’s a good idea.

2. Nothing that I can really think of.

3. They’ll be all for it.

Maurice Andrew (90), retired

1. I think they are excellent, very well laid out with a variety of different features.

2. No.

3. I would certainly hope they’ve used it a lot, and have found they’ve been able to come without their cars and that it’s been a good place to walk.

Lacks shelter from cold winds and rain - surely we could do better.
