Roy Philip Bundz’s request, however, was not granted by Judge David Robinson, who gave him a 12-month deferred sentence.
The charges he faced each carry a maximum penalty of three months’ imprisonment.
The defendant, who was charged with trespass and disorderly behaviour following an incident on Monday, refused to engage with duty lawyers yesterday.
When he appeared in the Dunedin District Court, the judge asked him how he wanted to progress matters.
"Guilty, whatever. Throw away the key," Bundz said.
The court heard he had turned up to speak to registry staff this week and became "hostile", refusing to leave when asked.
When security staff intervened, he continued his defiance.
"You became ... belligerent and increasingly aggressive and it took a number of security staff to remove you," Judge Robinson said.
When he was later arrested, Bundz told police he was at the courthouse to discuss the sale of his mother’s house, and complained lawyers were not giving him adequate assistance.
"What you did really was to disrupt the functioning of the court on the day and you did nothing to advance your case," the judge said.
Bundz was warned that should he commit any further crimes, he could be resentenced on these charges.
After Judge Robinson imposed his penalty, the defendant appeared surprised when he was released, ushered out of the dock and led away to the exit.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said Bundz remained trespassed from the courthouse.
