HANNAH KIM
2013: Kim was a cellist with the Dunedin Sinfonia and had won the school’s year 12 highest achievement award.
Before committing to studying medicine, she planned to find out what being what a doctor was like by working in a Tanzanian hospital in the summer holidays.
2023: Kim says her time in Tanzania led to another medical volunteer trip to rural Cambodia in 2018 "and hopefully many more to come".
A junior doctor at Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury, she recently passed the generic surgical science exam (GSSE), which is the first of several on the path to becoming a surgeon.
She has bachelor of medicine, bachelor of surgery and bachelor of science (psychology) degrees.
The Christchurch woman says she unfortunately no longer has the time to play the cello.
KATE LEGGAT (NEE THOMSON)
2013: Captain of the school’s senior A netball team, Thomson also played touch rugby for the Otago under-17 girls and the Otago under-19 mixed teams.
She planned to study health sciences and then do a degree in nursing or radiation therapy.
2023: Thomson did a nursing degree in Otago, then moved to Christchurch to be a paediatric oncology nurse.
After completing a postgraduate certificate, she now works in adult oncology. She and her husband are travelling overseas for six months and planning to work in Abu Dhabi.
