Heavy rain causes rock to fall, closing road

Heavy rainfall in Westland yesterday brought more rock and gravel down on to State Highway 6 at Diana Falls, again closing the highway to all traffic from Haast to Makarora.

The highway was closed at 1.30pm. The situation would be reviewed again at 9am today, New Zealand Transport Agency West Coast area manager Mark Pinner said.

''With the rain and waterfalls running across the slip face, more rock and gravel is being washed on to the highway, making it unsafe for motorists to drive through the area.

''Our contractors will be on site at first light [today] to check what has come down overnight and whether we are able to reopen the highway,'' Mr Pinner said.

With further heavy rain forecast for tomorrow, NZTA was advising motorists there could be further disruptions.
