Man badly hurt as van plunges down bank

A 72-year-old suffered serious injuries when his van plunged 150 metres down a bank in Hawkes Bay.

Emergency services were alerted about 7am today.

The man, who was travelling alone, suffered chest, back and hip injuries in the incident in which his vehicle left State Highway 5 near Te Haroto and ended up down the bank.

The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter responded and the man was flown to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital.

He was being assessed by medical staff but was in a stable condition, said a hospital spokeswoman.
