Fresh catches to be auctioned at uni

The University of Otago’s Union Lawn will turn into a fish market tomorrow.

The Otago Student Spearfishing and Hunting Club is hosting its annual fish auction for the fish caught in its spearfishing competition.

The proceeds from the auction will be going to Rock Solid Dunedin, which supports local youth mentoring and development.

Club co-president Adam Smith said the donation was a way for the club to give back some of the good will shown to it by the welcoming Otago community.

"It’s a good opportunity to help out a Dunedin charity and someone who does a lot of good work in South Dunedin."

It was also a good excuse to get out diving, he said.

Although he was not counting his chickens, he was hopeful there would be lots of "tasty treats" to sell at the auction.

The competition was open to all and there would be prizes given for the the biggest kina of the day, best novice and most meritorious fish, the fish that "wows" the judges the most.

The first place, second place and third place prizes would be determined by the number of species caught and the weight of the fish caught.

Mr Smith said competitors would have from 7am to 1pm to spearfish in the Otago region except for in East Otago Taiapure in recognition of the ongoing restoration work in that area.

At 1pm, there would be a filleting competition on the lawn, then prizegiving at 3pm and the auction at 4pm.
