An ocean of lights will soon engulf Dunedin as the annual Midwinter Carnival makes its return to the city.

The carnival is gearing up to return on June 21 and 22, with volunteers hard at work getting everything ready.

This year’s theme will be "Creatures of the Deep," and will feature an array of ocean-themed lanterns including a school of fish, seals, whales, penguins and much more.

Midwinter Carnival trust chairman Paul Smith said the carnival was all about celebrating local creativity, the environment and the change of seasons.

"We’re inviting our community to First Church to celebrate the wonderful world of water and the fascinating creatures that live above and below the surface."

Brophy Aerials will be swinging high above the crowd dressed as light up jellyfish, and performers from many dance troupes around the city will be dressed up and roaming around.

Before the event, there would be four weekend workshops so people could make their own lanterns.

The lantern-making would get more and more difficult every weekend, with the first lantern making session being to make a jellyfish.

The next three would be a fish, a penguin, and finally, a boat.

Those who made lanterns would be invited to a procession down Bath St and around First Church and given free entry to the event.

Ticket prices this year were $5 for children, $10 for adults.

Anyone under 3 would be admitted free.

Tickets were available for the session times of 6pm, 7pm and 8pm over both days.
