Forestry slash ablaze on windy, warm day

Firefighters in Otago kept a series of vegetation fires in check on a windy and warm Anzac Day.

Fire and Emergency NZ (Fenz) received a call just before 10am yesterday after forestry slash caught fire at Lee Stream, near Outram, a spokeswoman said.

Firefighters were sent from the Outram, Mosgiel, Waihola, Dunedin and Middlemarch stations, and they were supported by helicopters and water tankers.

Helicopters Otago pilot David Gale said three helicopters were required in conditions he described as quite windy, or "relatively breezy".

Water was obtained from local ponds, he said.

Fenz said the fire had been contained by about 3pm.

A relatively small vegetation fire also happened at Mosgiel about 10.30am, the spokeswoman said.

Firefighters were sent from the Mosgiel, Waikouaiti, Portobello and Wakari stations.

Piles of wood caught fire at Hillend in the Clutha district about 11am, the Fenz spokeswoman said.

At Waihola, an old slash pile smouldered from about 11.40am.

All the fires were contained through the day.
