South Island National Chrysanthemum show secretary Kit Jack and husband Walter Jack admire the top prize bloom, "Peggy Anne", grown by Tom Dahlenburg, of Otautau, in Dunedin yesterday.

The show was held in conjunction with the annual Dunedin Horticultural Society Autumn Show at the St Kilda Bowling Club on Saturday and yesterday Mrs Jack said there were up to 280 entries, and the quality of the flowers this year had been striking.

"I’ve never seen them like that for a long time."

Another standout aspect of this year’s show was the wide age range of those who took part — entrants ranged from a pre-teen to two 92-year-olds.

Growing and showing the blooms was an enjoyable way to connect with people, she said.
