ECan's draft regional public transport plan proposes to allow people to bring some pets onto public buses in an approved carrier at off-peak times.
The plan would allow adult passengers to bring one pet only on board during off-peak travel hours on weekdays, 9am to 3pm and after 6pm, and on weekends.
If the move is adopted, an additional proposal would ease the restrictions to allow leashed and muzzled dogs on buses and increase the limit to two pets per passenger.
The draft plan's consultation document states: "Allowing passengers to travel with pets would support pet owners who don’t own a car or suitable transport for trips to the vet, or for work or leisure."
The draft plan covers the Metro service in Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri, MyWay in Timaru, Total Mobility and the Community Vehicle Trusts.
