Environment Canterbury has confirmed the forestry worker who was critically injured in North Canterbury was a contractor working on a regional council-owned forestry block.

The person was flown to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition after emergency services were called to the West Eyreton property on Monday.

An ECan spokesperson said it had initiated an investigation into the incident and was supporting the injured contractor and others impacted by it.

The council manages around 2700ha of pine forest plantation.

Worksafe is also investigating.

Forestry is one highest-risk industries in Aotearoa, with a death rate about 20 times higher than average.
