Black smoke was seen from The Palms shopping centre which was near the vicinity of the fire.
The fire was believed to have started in a garage, but spread to the house.
There have been no reported injuries.
Four fire crews were sent to the incident.
Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman Darryl Ball said the garage was on fire when the crews arrived, and the fire caused a small amount of damage to the house.
Three crews were called to extinguish the fire.
