But the 49-year-old took a chance during the Covid-19 lockdown and submitted some illustrations to a publication called The77, which includes new comics from UK artists.
The77 is a 68-page quarterly retro comic anthology with a style similar to what many people would remember from the 1970s.
Wright drew the pictures for British comic writer Steve MacManus’ story, The Tinkling Triangles, and MacManus loved them.
MacManus is well-known for being the former editor of 2000 AD, a weekly British science fiction-oriented comic magazine.
Wright said The Tinkling Triangles is about a celebrity family who are booked onto the wrong flight by their manager and head towards a war planet in space.
He had given up on his dream of illustrating comics, but it has now become a reality. The77 editor Ben Cullis wants more drawings from him for the next edition in August.
"I gave it my best shot and about 20 years ago sort of realised nothing was going to go anywhere, so I gave up on it completely.
"Eventually, I went into illustration [work], but I still didn’t think comics would ever go anywhere.”
Cullis said Wright deserves his place as a regular contributor to The77.
MacManus is also full of praise for Wright’s work.
"I feel blessed the script found its way into his Kiwi studio," MacManus said.
"He has visualised the characters perfectly, capturing each family member’s idiosyncrasies.
"His style for the strip evokes memories of that great Spanish artist, Casanova."
The77 is available in New Zealand through Whitianga Comics and Arkham City Comics in Auckland.
