The head of Brock Deer stag Effen, at age 5, won the open section and was awarded the Allcomers Trophy at a ceremony in Invercargill last month.
Brock Deer owner Elliot Brock said the win was "quite unexpected".
"It was a great surprise."
The 11.28kg head also won three other competition sections — five year red, people’s choice and the section restricted to Southland farmers.
"It was clearly the best velvet head there because not only did the judges pick it but the people picked it as well."
More than 150 people attended the Brock Deer 22nd sire stag and yearling hind sale on farm in Merino Downs, about 25km northeast of Gore, last week.
The "huge framed" stag was extremely quiet and was the son of sire Bluerock and dam Y387.
"It is an outstanding animal."
A hind sold for $20,000, the most spent on a hind at a sale in New Zealand this season.
"That’s the highest price we’ve ever got for a hind, so that was good."
The yearling hind was a full sister of stag Lazarus, which the stud sold to Hawke’s Bay deer farmers for more than $100,000 in 2020.
