Centre president Steve Bellew, of Edendale, said the event could continue under the Red setting of the Covid traffic light system as about 80 triallists would be competing over two days from Saturday.
"I’m looking forward to it — it’s going to be good."
Waimahaka Collie Club was hosting the event and running it in conjunction with its club trial.
The club put on a great event, Mr Bellew said.
"All the community come out and help."
Triallists were coming from across Southland and Otago to compete in four disciplines — long head, short head and yard, zigzag hunt and straight hunt.
Points would be on offer to qualify for the New Zealand championships, hosted by the Taumarunui Collie Club in King Country from May 30.
Triallists must show their Covid vaccine passes to compete in Waimahaka this weekend, he said.
"We are doing everything by the book."
