Consumers have nothing to worry about regarding egg products from two Waikouaiti poultry farms in light of the lead levels detected in the township’s water, based on available information, Zeagold Foods says.
A spokesman said the Ministry for Primary Industries had advised the firm there was no food safety issue. The company has conducted testing for health implications for its birds.
Livestock and products were tested at poultry farms in Matakana Dr and Inverary St, Waikouaiti, after a do-not-drink notice was issued by the Dunedin City Council and Public Health South on Tuesday.
Test results would take seven days, Zeagold Foods general manager Hamish Sutherland said on Wednesday.
"We are not anticipating any bird health or human health issues."
The firm was contacted by the council on Tuesday night after "significantly elevated" lead levels were detected in two drinking water sampling sites.
Zeagold had made no changes to its supply lines and was gathering information, he said.
Staff working on the farms had been provided clean, fresh water.
The firm was trying to get more information about water supply for livestock.
"We have got veterinary advice on the potential impact," Mr Sutherland said.
Based on that, the firm did not believe there was a high risk to livestock, but it wanted all the details.
