Dunedin farmer John Bayne is calling time and selling his flock.

The 72-year-old runs about 80 Texel cross sheep in Green Island.

He runs the flock on his more than 4ha lifestyle block and on another more than 4ha paddock across the road he leases from the Dunedin City Council.

An "excellent" lambing, which produced 97 lambs from 58 ewes, finished last week.

He offered 16 ewe lambs at Balclutha Saleyards last week due to his pending retirement from farming.

"There comes a time."

Up to his retirement at age 60, he mowed sportsfields for Delta in Dunedin from 1988.

He once worked on several stations across Otago, starting as a farmhand at Merivale Station in Lindis Pass, age 17.

A career change from farming was due to an economic downturn.

"Farming did a big dive in ‘85."

He planned to sell his remaining ewes in about a month.

"It is a shame but it is time."
