A South Otago community rallied for a scarecrow building competition to help put its town on the map.

Clinton Lions member Benji Perry, of Waipahi, said the club planted a paddock of sunflowers to bring attention to the town.

‘‘To put it on the map.’’

The land where the sunflowers were planted, which was once a saleyards, is owned by the club.

To celebrate the inaugural sunflower crop, the club launched a community scarecrow-building competition.

The competition had 35 scarecrows entered across five categories.

Competitors included pupils from Clinton Playcentre, Clinton School, Poupoutunoa Kindergarten and Waiwera South School.

‘‘It was a good excuse for a community competition,’’ Mr Perry said.

The sunflowers were planted by the community, using seed given by Canterbury company The Good Oil.

A decision on the future use of the sunflower crop was pending.
