An Otago stag with an "outstanding" head was crowned the trophy antler champion at the New Zealand National Velvet and Hard Antler Competition.

The 17.72kg antlers of Black Forest Park stag Alonso was named the champion at a ceremony in Invercargill last month.

The victorious 6-year-old head of Alonso was on display at the Black Forest Park deer sale at Woodside, near Outram, last week.

Black Forest Park owner Richard Currie said he was "very pleased" with the win.

The head measured an "outstanding" 93.4 inches (2.38m).

"He is impressive."

Alonso was the sire of Ferdinand, which sold for $70,000 at the sale last year — the highest price paid in New Zealand for the 2021-22 sale season

"He is a truly amazing stag and is breeding very well."

The sale this year had good quality stags on offer but did not include a "stand out rock star like Ferdinand".

Six of the 10 3-year-old trophy sires and a 3-year-old velvet sire sold for an average of $5722 including a top price of $20,500 for velvet sire 19561 to the Whyte family, of Mid-Canterbury.

The stag was the son of sire Maple and dam 13469.

Donald Whyte, speaking to Southern Rural Life after the sale, said the appeal of 19561 was its "strong head and good pedigree" and its assuredness of breeding genetics.

"It’s not about the stag itself, it’s about the sons and daughters going forward — that’s where the value is."

All of the seven hinds on offer sold for an average price of $1871 including a top price of $5100 to Rural Livestock agent Adam Whaanga.

Mr Currie said he was "happy enough" with the sale result.

He ran about 2000 deer across 400ha in Woodside and Clinton.

The focus would remain on breeding deer which produce a good trophy without compromising velvet quality, he said.

"The prospects for the industry are looking good."
