Crop competition raises about $64K

The annual Lions Winter Crop Competition, run by Waianakarua and Waiareka Valley Lions Clubs and supported by Catalyst Performance Agronomy, has raised about $64,000 for local causes.

The money will go to support the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter Trust, Oamaru St John Building Fund and Waitaki stadium.

The annual competition pits North Otago growers against each other in a battle to grow the district’s best fodder beet, kale, swede and winter rape.

The competition winners were. —

Irrigated kale: Carl and Sarah Sinclair first; Ross and Belinda Isbister second and Dave McCabe, North Otago Ditching and Baling, third.

Dry kale: Jack Hamilton first; Jim Gibson second and Grant Gibson third.

Irrigated fodder beet: Dave McCabe, North Otago Ditching and Baling, first; Jimmy Hunter second and Jeff Thompson third.

Dry fodder beet: Joe Laming first; Dave McCabe, North Otago Ditching and Baling, second and Paul Rae third.

Dry winter rape: Scott Gibson first; Jim Craig second and Murray Rodgers third.

Irrigated Swedes: Hayden Williams first; Lyndon Strang second and Richard Metcalf third.

Dry Swedes: Dan Burke/Grant Ludemann, Glencoe, first; Peter Dodd second and Philip Nicholson third.
