Fire crews are responding to a second fire near Tiwai Point in Southland today.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said crews were called to a vegetation fire on the Awarua Plains at about 8.50pm tonight after staff at Tiwai Smelter noticed the blaze.

Three fire engines from Invercargill, Kingswell and Tiwai and two tankers from Invercargill and Wallacetown responded to the fire.

The spokeswoman could not say how big the scrub fire was but it had been contained and crews were dampening down hot spots.

It appeared to have been started by a toppled powerline, she said.

Early this morning, crews from Kingswell, Invercargill, Tiwai, Wallacetown and Hedgehope spent two and a-half hours extinguishing a suspicious car fire which had spread to vegetation.

The spokeswoman said the fires were in a "similar vicinity" but were "not obviously related".
