One dead after State Highway 73 crash

A person has died at the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Canterbury overnight.

Emergency services were called to the crash on West Coast Rd (State Highway 73), between Hoskyns and Bealey Rds, Kirwee, in the Selwyn district about 9.30pm on Thursday.

One person died at the scene of the crash and two others were transported to hospital in a critical condition.

"Police are providing support to the families of those involved," a spokesperson said.

The serious crash unit has conducted a scene examination and its investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing.

State Highway 73 reopened about 3am.
