Alleged drink driver lands upside down after crash

An allegedly drunk man on his way home from a pub flipped his vehicle after driving in the wrong lane and crashing into a parked car.

Acting Senior Sergeant Simon Reay said police were called to Kaikorai Valley Rd in Dunedin at 4.35pm yesterday after a car flipped onto its roof after crashing into a parked car.

A 50-year-old man had just decided his afternoon drinking session at a nearby pub was finished and got into his car to drive home.

He hopped in his vehicle, started driving and when he reached Mellor St, he pulled into the lane on the wrong side of the road.

He continued into the intersection with Kaikorai Valley Rd when he hit a white Mazda on the back right hand side.

When the Mazda driver exited his car and approached the man’s vehicle to speak with him, he drove away, continuing on the wrong side of the road.

He then crashed into the right side of a parked green Mitsubishi, Snr Sgt Reay said.

The impact of the crash caused the man’s vehicle to flip onto its roof, blocking the south-bound lane for some time.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the driver lying on the ground out of his vehicle.

He was assessed by Hato Hone St John at the scene and was transported to Dunedin Hospital with a suspected head injury.

A blood sample was taken and charges were pending for the result, Snr Sgt Reay said.

Later at 9.10pm, a 24-year-old woman on her way home after having drinks at work crashed into a parked Mazda Familia, causing the car to smash through a white picket fence.

The woman got out, called police, who arrived and had her undergo breath testing procedures.

She recorded a breath alcohol level of 1095mcg, had her licence suspended for 28 days and received summons to appear in court at a later date.
