There's always some banter when two club teams meet and last Friday the Zingari Dirty Pirates and Zingari Dirty Reds were out to see who would be the better side on the night.

At the bottom of the third inning it was 5-2 to Dirty Pirates.

A three-bag hit to Stephan Gamblin and a home run to Jake Morris in the fourth put them further ahead 10-2.

Dirty Pirates were able to prevent the Dirty Reds from scoring again and another three runs in the fifth inning made the final score 13-2, putting Zingari Dirty Reds in second place going into the semifinals.

Jason Hampton was top batter for Dirty Pirates and Ethan Price was top batter for Dirty Reds.

Temuka Red Hawks were looking to cement a place in the semifinals when they faced the U17 Development team.

A home run to Tony George scored two runs at the top of the second innings.

At their turn at bat, U17 Development had six safe hits scoring 10 runs to take the lead.

At the top of the fifth inning, with the score 12-5, Red Hawks scored another two runs from a home run to Regan Morris.

The final score was 12-8 to U17 Development.

Their top batter was Ben Hunter Brady and Jason Pehi was the top batter for the Red Hawks.

Parkside Ram Raiders have improved with each game throughout the season and celebrated a win over Temuka Black Hawks 19-10.

Parkside out-batted the Black Hawks 25 hits to 12 including a home run to Josh Small.

Adam Green and Chrizandre Naude were their top batters with five safe hits each.

Top batter for Black Hawks was Sam Edwards with four safe hits.

Steelers notched up another win defeating Point Geraldine Panthers 12-4 and remain at the top of the table.

Steelers pitcher, Kelly Hamer, had three safe hits.

Jimmy Robinson and Bridget McNamee both had safe hits for PG Panthers.

Indoor bowls

Derek Cooper and Dave Ellis were the last winners of South Canterbury Indoor Bowls’ popular summer pairs tournament.

The pair had four wins, as did Jenelle and Kelvin Lockyer.

A countback was required to decide the final placings, with Cooper and Ellis having 17 ends won and 30 score points, to the Lockyers’ 16 ends won and 32 score points.

In third place were Carol Dawson and Dave Shand with three wins and a draw.

Teams with three wins were George and Carol Tuck, David and Mary Mealings and Roydon Woods with Catherine Hickey.

This was the last summer pairs for the 2023-24 season.

With the season about to open it will be a fast and furious start to it.

Next Wednesday the umpires’ triples will be held, followed by the opening day pairs on Saturday, March 16.

Entries close on March 15 for the Clubs New Zealand South Island Championships to be held at the Hornby Club.

The first representative game is the women’s triangular against Ashburton and Canterbury on Sunday, April 21 in Christchurch.

Women could push for their selection in the annual McClintock trophy clash between the men and women on Wednesday, March 27.

The first zone qualifier event is the New Zealand mixed fours on Saturday, April 6.

The winners will contest the eastern zone finals in Oamaru over the first weekend in July.

It is great to have North Otago back hosting these events.

Men’s outdoor bowls

In what has to be classed as one of the greatest finals on South Canterbury soil.

West End’s Dave McNeill and Gary Ford had to be in outstanding form to beat Geraldine and South Canterbury’s in-form pairing of Roger Glendinning and Jared Trevathan in the Champion of Champions pairs final at the West End green on Saturday.

McNeill entered the hall of fame, winning his Gold Star for winning five South Canterbury titles and did it in style, beating Glendinning and Trevathan who were going for a threepeat of this event, which was won on the last end.

Results: Quarterfinals: Geraldine (Roger Glendinning, Jarod Trevathan) 22, Pleasant Point (Grant Shaw, Doug Andrews) 11; Fairlie (Stu Barwood, Terry O Conner) 20, Timaru (Russell Botting, John Rankin) 14; Temuka (Roger Jackson, Greg Valentine) 21, Kia Toa (Sean O’Neill, Jason Browning) 9.

Semifinal: Geraldine 22, Fairlie 9; West End 18, Temuka 11.

Final: West End 15, Geraldine 13.

Fours

Sam Morton claimed his 10th South Canterbury title in guiding his Temuka team of Greg Valentine, Craig Dale and Dave Wood to win the South Canterbury Champion of Champions final against the Geraldine team, played at the Kia Toa bowling club on Sunday.

They were up against Dan Rooney, Dave Curtis, Bruce Genever and Michael Jones in the final.

Curtis and Jones were both playing for their Gold Star, which is five South Canterbury titles.

The Geraldine team played well but some big shots by Skip Morton crushed their chances.

It was a top display by all Temuka bowlers but special mention for the way Craig Dale played, winning his first South Canterbury title.

Women’s outdoor bowls

Bowls South Canterbury Champion of Champion games started last weekend with the men’s and ladies’ pairs played on Saturday at the West End green.

Games were of 18 ends, and a one-life system.

The pairs final was between Carolyn Darby and Mel Reid (Temuka) and Mata Frankum and Julie Robins (Waimate).

Each team scored four shots on the first four ends, then Carolyn scored four shots, while Mata scored three shots to be 8-7 to Carolyn, who scored two shots, and Mata scored six shots to lead 13-10.

Darby scored seven shots, then Mata scored five to win 18-17.

Sunday saw the Champion of Champion fours played at the Kia Toa green.

The final was between the Rosina Beker’s Waimate team and Sharon Leonard’s Kia Toa four and was pretty even most of the way.

Rosina started with three singles and next end Sharon scored a four.

Rosina scored two, Sharon scored three; 7-5 to Sharon.

Rosina scored a single, Sharon scored 2, Rosina scored 3, Sharon scored 1 to be 10-9 up.

Rosina scored 2 shots, Sharon scored 1 to be 11 all after 13 of the 15 ends to play.

Rosina scored a single to be 12-11 up, on the last end Rosina’s 3rd, Lyn Chave drew 2 lovely shots, and Rosina put in another shot to go to 15, Sharon had a yard on shot to move the shots but just missed on two occasions.

A great game for a final, which gives Waimate the pairs and Fours Women’s Champions.
