The West Melton Rugby Club was given two Super Rugby Pacific jerseys signed by the title-winning Crusaders to auction off as part of its annual quiz night on Friday.
Club captain Sharlene Wiseman said the proceeds from the jersey sold for the highest amount of money would go to Emma Eyles’ daughter Monroe.
Eyles died aged 41 on May 28 after she was diagnosed with inoperable bowel and liver cancer.
She spent eight months in agonising pain going back and forth to doctors who told her she had irritable bowel syndrome or a gastro bug – and sent her home with paracetamol.
Her daughter Monroe is now adjusting to life without her mother.
A Givealittle page created for Monroe has raised more than $76,000 of its $100,000 goal.
Leading up to the quiz night, the club said on social media: “Now is the time for our community to do all we can do to help look after Monroe, which was Emma’s only wish before she sadly lost her battle with bowel cancer.”
Wiseman said the bidding was strong for the two jerseys, which fetched $2300 and $2000.
Quiz attendees made some cash donations on top of the auction, pushing the club’s total for Monroe up to $2550.
There was about 120 people at the quiz and auction.
“Times are tough for people. I just thought it was really awesome that people pulled together,” Wiseman said.
Funds raised from the night are being tallied, but are estimated to reach more than $10,000.
