A man has been killed in a crash between a motorcycle and a freight train in South Canterbury.
Police said the man riding the motorcycle was killed when it collided with a northbound freight train, near the small town of Otaio, south of Timaru.
"The man was on a farm track that intersects with a private level crossing when the collision happened just after 5.30pm today."
Waimate Police, the police serious crash unit and photography section were all called to the scene.
WorkSafe had been notified.
"Support is being given to the train driver by KiwiRail and police."
Police said they were making enquiries in relation to the death on behalf of the coroner who will release their finding in due course.
Fire crews from St Andrews, Waimate and Washdyke were dispatched to the incident, but the Waimate and Washdyke appliances were stood down before they arrived at the scene.
