A fleeing motorist dodged police road spikes then hit a traffic light in Christchurch on Sunday night.

A police spokesperson said a vehicle of interest was spotted in Avondale about 10.45pm and officers signalled the driver to pull over.

After the driver ignored police, officers laid road spikes on QEII Drive.

The driver managed to swerve past the road spikes but then crashed into a traffic light and road sign and kept going.

The vehicle was later found abandoned in a St Albans paddock and the driver had fled the scene.

Police inquiries are ongoing and the driver had not been located yet.
