Luckily no one was inside a caravan that caught fire at a holiday park just north of Christchurch on Sunday.

A crew from the Brooklands Fire Station was called to the blaze at the Spencer Beach Holiday Park in Spencerville about 9.32am.

The caravan was found to be "smouldering" at the entrance of the park when they arrived.

The fire was contained and the vehicle was ventilated.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said there were no occupants in the caravan.

He said the caravan suffered some damage but he did not know the extent.

The fire has not been deemed suspicious.

Later on Sunday, fire crews from the Wigram and Harewood stations were called to extinguish an oven fire at a property on Riccarton Rd about 3.25pm.

Police were also called to the scene to manage the traffic flow along the busy road.

The oven fire was put out by the time the fire crews arrived, and there was no sign of a further blaze in the extractor fan.

There was no need for a further investigation, the Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said.

It marks a busy time for fire crews after a large blaze swept through several classrooms at South New Brighton School on Friday night.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.

The school will not open its doors today, it said on Facebook in a message to parents.
