A woman has been arrested over a house fire in Christchurch.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Woodgrove Ave in North New Brighton just before 9am on Friday.

A police spokeswoman said a 34-year-old woman was arrested over the weekend and remanded in custody to appear in court again on Monday.

The woman has been charged with wilfully damaging property by fire.

It was believed no one was inside the house at the time.

A nearby resident told starnews.co.nz they saw black smoke coming from the house.

"They [Fire and Emergency New Zealand] were on to it straight away, but I tell you what, if they weren't that place would have burnt to the ground," the resident said.
