The Coastal Spirit 12 grade girls football team finished fifth at a South Island tournament in Blenheim last week.

The team bounced back from and opening 3-2 loss to eventual tournament winners Southland to earn a 6-1 win over Waimak United.

A 2-2 draw with South Canterbury and a 1-1 stalemate with FC Nelson kept their finals hopes alive before a 1-0 loss to eventual runners-up Cashmere Technical.

A 1-0 win over Marlborough was enough to see them into the play-off for fifth on finals day.

Coastal Spirit gained a 3-1 win over South Canterbury in their last game to finish fifth.

Emma Johnstone was the team’s most valuable player while Ruby Hale earned the golden glove award for her efforts in-goal.

The team was given the tournament’s fair play award for their style of play and spirit in which they took to the field.

Southland beat Cashmere Technical 2-1 in the final.
