UC magazine closer to independence

Canterbury University student magazine Canta has made a significant step towards gaining editorial independence.

At a University of Canterbury Students’ Association meeting, Canta editor Samantha Mythen presented a petition from students with more than 700 signatures calling for editorial independence.

This led to the UCSA executive moving a motion to “instruct management to prepare a paper incorporating student feedback for Canta to become editorially independent and to report back to the executive by the next committee meeting.”

The move comes after Ms Mythen spoke out against the UCSA’s pre-publication vetting, which was leading to some articles being pulled before they go to print.
