First-hand experience

Haylee Evans was one of a handful of Otago Polytechnic automotive students who got to observe the scrutineering process for the Central Machine Hire Otago Rally at the polytechnic’s automotive workshops in Kaikorai Valley yesterday.

About 120 rally cars were scrutinised by officials to ensure they were safe before their drivers and co-drivers strap in and hit the accelerator pedal.

This included checking roll-cages, seats, harnesses, first-aid kits and, from a compliance point of view, making sure the cars represent the competition class in which they are entered.

The 275km race starts this morning and winds up tomorrow at the Brighton Domain, about 2.45pm.
