Fast forward

Cromwell brothers Luke, 15, and Max, 16, Casey shoot through the Springvale Autocross course, near Alexandra, in their car on Saturday.

Central Otago Motorsport Club president Corey MacAskill, of Cromwell, said the event was a good starting point for junior drivers to get into motor racing.

"You can come along with your basic car and just have a bit of fun.

"It is a good place to learn and be safe."

Twenty-seven drivers took part in the event, racing up gravel roads and through a quarry.

New Zealand rally driver Hayden Paddon attended the event, riding shotgun with some drivers.

He came along to "teach a couple of the young guys what to do with car control and help them out, which is pretty cool ... He could make time to come along".

The club was open to anyone who wanted to have a go at motorsport, MacAskill said.

"We’ve got a club car ... for people that want to learn.

"We built that club car just for that reason - to get people into it."
