Otago relay team win Australian title

Otago's top sprinters have claimed an Australian title on their way to breaking an Otago record.

Hayato Yoneto (Queenstown), Jackson Rogers (Aspiring), Felix McDonald (Taieri) and John Gerber (Hill City University) won the senior men’s 4x100m relay in a personal best of 40.46sec at the Australia Athletics Championships in Adelaide on Thursday.

They finished ahead of the Victorian team of Jacob Sesar, Craig Concesso, Brayden Portelli and Seb Hadaway, who finished in a personal best of 41.73sec. New South Wales (42.08sec) and Western Australia (42.51sec) also ran personal bests at SA Athletics Stadium.

All teams finished with medals due to it being an Australian national event and Otago representing New Zealand.

Otago broke the Otago relay record of 40.47sec set by Chris Donaldson, Andrew Moore, Dallas Roberts and Lachie McLellan in 2005.

Jorja Gibbons was also part of the New Zealand under-20 side that finished second in the women’s under-20 4x100m relay.

They finished with a personal best of 45.44sec, just 00.024sec outside of the qualification time for the world under-20 championships.

The Australian championships continue today.
