Catherine Lund and Zara Geddes have got Otago off to a fantastic start at the national track and field championships.

The Otago duo finished first and second in the women’s under-20 5000m in Wellington last night.

Lund won with her time of 17min 00.15sec and Geddes picked up silver, finishing in 17min 30.91sec.

Lund broke away to lead
the pack by 30m early in the race.

She extended to more than 70m at one point — as Geddes chased her down and left the rest of the group behind — but she never slowed down and ultimately breezed home.

Alexa Duff won an impressive gold in the women’s under-20 javelin.

She threw 43.14m, ahead of second-placed Cantabrian Mya Phillips’ throw of
37.90m.

Blake Dalton picked up silver in the men’s under-18 100m with his time of 10.93sec and Alex Walker also won silver in the men’s under-16 100m with his time of 11.56sec.

Charlee Farquhar finished fourth in the women’s under-16 shot put, as did Lisa Lokman in the women’s under-20 triple jump.

The championships finish on Sunday.
