House badly damaged in South Dunedin fire

A fire tore through a house in South Dunedin on Saturday evening.

An Otago Daily Times photographer at the scene of the fire on Helena St, near Bathgate Park, said at about 7.30pm smoke was pouring from the roof of a roughcast house on the street.

It appeared the house was badly damaged.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said crews from St Kilda, Lookout Point, Roslyn and Dunedin stations attended after the fire was reported at 7.08pm, and a crew from Willowbank station provided support.

It did not appear that anyone had been injured, and crews had all left the scene by 11.30pm, she said.

A fire investigator was looking into the cause of the blaze.
